When you’re building a high-performance engine, every detail counts. One of the most important (but often overlooked) steps is correctly setting your piston ring gap. What is Piston Ring Gap?

The piston ring gap is the small clearance between the ends of your piston rings when they’re installed inside the cylinder bore. As the engine heats up, the rings expand — if the gap is too small, the ends can butt together, causing major damage. If the gap is too large, you’ll lose compression and power.

How to Measure Ring Gap

  1. Install the piston ring squarely into the bore using a piston or ring squaring tool.
  2. Measure the end gap with a feeler gauge.
  3. Compare the measurement to the recommended specs for your engine and application.

For example, CP-Carrillo recommends the following minimum ring end gaps based on bore size:

2. If you over file the second ring a bit, its ok. Remember the second ring's main job is just to control oil.
